Ethereal incense smoke rising — the ancient fragrance of Somali myrrh

Rooted in
Ancient Ground

Our story begins in Somalia — not in a boardroom, but in the desert, beneath the branches of the Commiphora tree. This is where our family has harvested myrrh for generations.

Our Story

A Family Business

"This resin is not just our product. It is our inheritance."

Myst & Myrrh is a family-run business — and when we say family, we mean it in the deepest sense. Our roots go back generations to the pastoralist communities of Somalia, where the harvesting of myrrh resin is not an industry, but a way of life passed down from grandparent to parent to child.

Growing up, the scent of myrrh was the smell of home. We watched our elders move through the groves with quiet knowledge — knowing which tree was ready to give, which needed rest, when to score the bark and when to leave it in peace. That knowledge was not learned from a book. It was learned through years of patient watching, of working the land with respect.

"Every piece of resin we sell carries the hands that harvested it, the soil it grew from, and the generations of knowledge that made it possible."

When we launched Myst & Myrrh in the UK, our intention was simple: to share something real. Not a synthetic imitation, not a commodity bought through layers of middlemen — but the exact same pure, wild-harvested resin that our family has treasured for as long as anyone can remember. Nothing added. Nothing compromised.

The Sacred Source

The Commiphora Tree

The Commiphora myrrha is one of the most resilient trees on earth. It grows in harsh, sun-scorched terrain where little else survives — a true testament to the endurance that defines the Horn of Africa. Its roots reach deep into ancient soil, and its resin has been traded, burned and cherished for over 4,000 years.

To harvest myrrh sustainably, the bark is carefully scored — a small wound that triggers the tree's natural healing response. The resin seeps out slowly, hardens in the desert air into amber tears, and is then hand-gathered at precisely the right moment. Done correctly, the tree heals completely and can give again the following season. Done incorrectly, it can be damaged permanently.

This is why we never rush. Our harvesters know these trees individually — some of them the same trees their grandparents tended. The grove is not just a resource. It is a relationship.

The People Behind
Every Harvest

Behind every pouch of myrrh you receive is a community of Somali harvesters who have dedicated their lives to this work. These are not factory workers or supply chain statistics. They are skilled craftspeople, carrying ancient knowledge that no certificate can replace.

We buy directly from them. No agents. No importers. No middlemen taking cuts at every stage. This means our harvesters receive a fair price for their work — and it means you receive resin that has not sat in a warehouse for months losing its potency.

When a new batch is harvested, we know about it immediately. We know which grove it came from, which season, which hands gathered it. That is the difference between a product and a provenance.

The Circle of Giving

Every Purchase
Gives Something Back

We have never forgotten where we come from. The communities in Somalia that raised our family, that taught us the groves, that shared their knowledge across generations — they deserve more than our gratitude. They deserve investment.

That is why a percentage of every single sale made through Myst & Myrrh flows directly back into these communities. Not as charity — but as an obligation. As something owed.

Local Education

A portion of our profits supports local schools and educational resources in the Somali communities our harvesters call home. Education is the most powerful thing we can give the next generation.

Why Quality Matters to Us

More Than a Product.
A Promise.

There is no shortage of myrrh products in the UK. You can find cheap resin blends in any health shop or online marketplace — products that are adulterated, diluted, or have sat in storage so long they have lost most of their character.

We sell none of that. What we sell is exactly what our family harvests — pure, wild Commiphora myrrha tears, freshly sourced, zero additives. We would not sell you something we would not burn in our own home. That commitment is not a marketing line. It is simply how we were raised.

When you buy from Myst & Myrrh, you are not just buying incense. You are connecting to a lineage that stretches back thousands of years — to the ancient trade routes of the Horn of Africa, to the mosques and homes where myrrh has burned in prayer and peace for as long as anyone can remember.

"We bring you Somalia's finest — because it is our home, and you deserve the very best of it."
