The Ancient Art of Resin Burning

Myrrh and frankincense have been burned across the Muslim world, ancient Egypt and the Horn of Africa for thousands of years. The method is simple, the result is extraordinary — a rich, warm fragrance that fills your entire home.

Our resin is wild-harvested directly from Commiphora trees in Somalia, sourced straight from the harvesters we work with. You are getting the same pure resin that has been traded along ancient routes for millennia — with free delivery to your UK door.

A Heat-Safe Burner

A brass censer, a clay or ceramic incense burner, or any heat-proof dish filled with sand. Do not use plastic. The charcoal gets very hot.

Step by Step

How to Burn Myrrh Resin

Follow these steps for the best experience.

01

Step One

Set Up Your Burner

Place your incense burner or brass censer on a stable, heat-resistant surface — never directly on wood or plastic. Open a window slightly to allow the fragrance to circulate. If using a censer, fill the base with a little sand to protect it from the heat.

02

Step Two

Light the Charcoal

Using tongs, hold the charcoal disc and light one edge with a lighter or match. You will see it spark and begin to glow. Place it carefully in your burner and wait 3–5 minutes until the entire disc is glowing orange and has a light grey ash coating. Do not rush this step — the disc needs to be fully lit before adding resin.

Always use tongs — the charcoal disc becomes extremely hot within seconds.

Step Three

Add the Resin

Once the charcoal is fully glowing, place 2–3 small pieces of myrrh resin directly onto the disc. The resin will begin to melt immediately, releasing a thick, rich smoke. The fragrance will fill your room within moments. Add more pieces as the scent fades — typically every 10–15 minutes.

04

Step Four

Enjoy & Maintain

The scent from pure Somali myrrh is deep and long-lasting. One charcoal disc will burn for 45–60 minutes. Never leave burning charcoal unattended and keep away from children. When finished, allow the disc to cool fully before disposing — it retains heat for a long time.

Expert Tips

Getting the Most from Your Resin

straighten

Less is More

Pure resin is highly concentrated. Start with 2–3 small pieces. You can always add more — it's much harder to clear a room that's been over-burned.

air

Ventilate the Room

Open a window or door slightly. Good airflow allows the fragrance to move around the space naturally and prevents the smoke from becoming too heavy.

Store it Correctly

Keep your resin in the resealable kraft bag, away from heat and moisture. Stored correctly, pure myrrh resin retains its fragrance for years.

Mix Myrrh & Frankincense

Place a piece of myrrh alongside a pinch of frankincense powder on the same charcoal disc. The two scents complement each other beautifully — earthy myrrh with bright, citrus-tinged frankincense.

Common Questions

Frequently Asked

Where does your myrrh come from? expand_more
Our myrrh is wild-harvested in Somalia in the Horn of Africa — one of the world's premier sources of Commiphora myrrha resin. We work directly with local harvesters, meaning you receive fresh, unadulterated resin with no middlemen. When a new harvest arrives, we make it available to our community first.
Is your resin 100% pure? expand_more
Yes. Our myrrh and frankincense contain zero additives, fillers, synthetic fragrance or binding agents. What you receive is exactly what comes off the tree — pure, wild-harvested resin tears.
Where do I buy charcoal discs in the UK? expand_more
Charcoal discs are widely available from halal shops, Middle Eastern grocery stores, Amazon, and some health food shops. Look for 'self-lighting charcoal discs' or 'hookah charcoal'. A roll of 10 typically costs £2–4 and each disc burns for 45–60 minutes.
How much resin do I need per burn? expand_more
Start with 2–3 small pieces (roughly the size of a pea). Pure Somali myrrh is highly concentrated — a single 25g bag will last many months of regular use.
Is the smoke safe to breathe? expand_more
Natural resin smoke is significantly less harmful than synthetic incense sticks, which often contain artificial chemicals and binding agents. However, always burn in a ventilated space and avoid prolonged direct inhalation of smoke. If you have asthma or respiratory conditions, consult a doctor first.
Can I mix myrrh and frankincense together? expand_more
Absolutely — this is one of the most popular combinations in the Muslim world and has been for centuries. Place a piece of myrrh alongside a small pinch of frankincense powder on the same charcoal disc. The two scents balance each other beautifully.
